Day 4 Aug 21 Penong to Norseman

Well today was a big day of travelling where we manged to leave Penong around 4.30 am (SA time) and got unto Norseman about 5.45 pm (WA time) so with adjustments for time zones we spent about 15 hours on the road and did about 1200 kms.
The day started at 4 am at Penong as  we wanted to get to a place called the "Head of the Bight" which is about 10 km this side of Nullabor for the 8 am opening to go and have a look at the whales just cruising around near the "beach"
Unfortunately Russel had miscalculated the distance we had to travel to get there as he was thinking Ceduna not Penong so we ended up being about 45mins early so we headed down to the roadhouse , filled up with some fuel and then went back to wait outside the entrance gates for 30 mins. It was nice to stop and watch the sun come up but really cold!!!! Out came the thermos and it was a coffee to keep warm.
Finally 8am came , the gates were opened and down to the cliff edges to see the whales. It was just amazing as there were so many and they just cruise along very close to land. It must be very deep as they disappear from sight and then magically reappear. I think Russ took about 200 photos so hopefully we will get a few good ones out of that.
Back on the road for many hours of travelling. Hardly saw a semi but we saw lots and lots and lots of caravans. Every shape and size you could imagine!!!
Did stop at one of the Bight lookouts so got some great pictures of the cliffs of the Great Australian Bight.
Rolled on over a variety of landscapes and very straight roads through the quarantine inspection on the border of SA and WA . Lunch was at Cocklebiddy and then onto Norseman. Now Norseman was the only place we didn't bother to book anything but we got into town and you would think that there was a convention on in town - even the caravan park was full. Ended up in the most expensive motel in town but when you are very tired , you really don't care.
Russ cooked our tea out the front of the unit and then we collapsed into bed for a solid 9 hours sleep.
Tomorrow we only have about 200 kms to do and then we will chill out in Esperance for a couple of days.

  1. That straight road photo keeps coming up.. Ha ha. Just like our plane flight. Same, same but different (memories of a different holiday). Good to read your messages on my blog. Thanks.
